Moissanite

What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone that has gained increasing popularity as an alternative to diamonds, especially for engagement rings, wedding bands, and other jewelry. But what exactly is moissanite, and why choose it over diamonds?

Moissanite is a naturally occurring crystal made of silicon carbide. It was first discovered by French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893 in a meteorite from Arizona. Since moissanite is found in very small quantities in nature, moissanite stones today are usually created synthetically in laboratories.

Moissanite is known for its high hardness and brilliance. It is the second hardest gemstone on the Mohs hardness scale, after diamond. Moissanite also has a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning it reflects more light and has more sparkle.

Why Choose Moissanite Over Diamond?

There are several reasons why moissanite might be a better choice than diamond:

Price: Moissanite is much more affordable than diamonds. You can get a larger stone for the same price as a smaller diamond, or a smaller moissanite for a significantly lower cost.

Durability: Moissanite is harder than many other gemstones, making it more durable and less prone to scratching or cracking with everyday wear.

Brilliance: Because moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, it reflects more light and has incredible brilliance. This often makes moissanite appear larger and more sparkly than a diamond of the same carat weight.

Environmental Friendliness: Moissanite is created synthetically in laboratories, which means it doesn't impact the environment the way diamonds mined from the earth do.

Ethics: The diamond industry has long been associated with ethical issues, such as forced labor and funding conflicts. By choosing moissanite, you can support a more ethical and fair trade practice.
